Shoreditch, Brick Lane, Spitalfields, Aldgate

London Street Photography ideas, start from here

As a millennial who’s getting back into the analogue photography rabbit hole (is this a midlife crisis?…), after finishing one roll on the South Bank and St Paul’s, I decided to take myself out to my favourite spot for street photography: going East from the City of London, in the Shoreditch area.

Let’s start with the walk:

  • I took the overground (I live near Clapham Junction, so that’s easier (even though sometimes you get the feeling you’d be walking faster than the Overground…), got off in Shoreditch High Street, which in itself is not a bad stop to take some train shots, and then crossed the street to Ebor St, walked past Chance St (and of course took a shot of the shoes).

This is from August 2023, there’s now also a t-shirt up there. The new shot will need to be developed.

  • I then walked around the little streets around there (awesome graffiti, if you have time to lose yourself for 10 minutes and immerse fully in street art, kind like dipping your toe in the water before diving in the wonderful pool of art that is Brick Lane);

  • Then cross the street again and go into Brick Lane. It was lunchtime so the queue for a Beigel was getting longer (skipped that, I really wanted a salt beef one, but I had snacks!), and started taking pics of the people there. Boy if my Minolta isn’t noisy!! I was noticed right away, but what can you do…

  • I walked all the side roads multiple times: Princelet Street, that road that goes to Brick Lane Station Park (lots of photographers there), Fournier Street, Wilkes Street, Fashion Street.

I f***ing love this shot so much.

  • I then turned into Spitalfields, I was getting hungry, so I got myself a quick burger at Bleekers (yummy, but small for £9), so I also got a Bao Bun with spicy fried chicken. When in Rome…

  • Changed the film that was finished, put the Minolta away (I don’t wanna use all the film right away), took the Canon RP out with the 18-135mm lens (I do prefer the 35mm f/1.8 for street photography, but today I wanted to be zoom-creative), I then walked around the market, then went towards Liverpool Street station.

Did she see me?

Probably, but she’s so good at posing.

  • After getting close to Liverpool Street, right before the Tesco, I saw this little alleyway

Alleyway

I just love the way this photo makes you feel like you’re actually walking in there.

  • Finished by walking up to Aldgate, had to wait 12 minutes for the first Circle Line to Victoria, so I took a few shots around the platform too, ‘cause why not. Now these are not perfectly in focus, unfortunately I had a the CPL filter still on and forgot. I kept wondering why I had to push the ISO so high in conditions of decent, if a bit low, daylight, and realised once the tube was arriving on the platform… bloody hell!

If you’d like to leave a comment, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the photos.

Have a good one and see you soon!
